ICD-11 proposals

Chapter 6 (the Neurology chapter)

One focus of this site is monitoring the progress of the revision of ICD-10 Chapter VI: Diseases of the nervous system (the Neurological chapter) with specific reference to the classifications coded in ICD-10 Volume 1: The Tabular list at G93.3: Postviral fatigue syndrome; (Benign) myalgic encephalomyelitis, and indexed in Volume 3: The Alphabetical Index at G93.3: Chronic fatigue syndrome and the population of content for ICD-11 for these three entities.

For more information see my report Update on ICD-11 development: July 3, 2011 (updated September 2011).

For information on the current ICD-10 classification and coding history of  Postviral fatigue syndrome, (Benign myalgic) encephalomyelitis and Chronic fatigue syndrome see this Dx Revision Watch tab page: ICD-11: CFS, ME

ICD-11 Chapter 5 Somatoform Disorders

This site is also monitoring the progress of the revision of the Somatoform Disorders section in ICD-10 Chapter V (Mental and Behavioural Disorders) for ICD-11 with specific reference to the categories currently classified under Somatoform Disorders (F45 – F48.0 in ICD-10).

The current, publicly viewable ICD-11 Alpha Browser pages for the Somatoform Disorders section of ICD-11 can be viewed here Chapter 5: Somatoform Disorders

DSM-5 Somatoform Disorders

This site is also monitoring the progress of the revision of the corresponding DSM-IV Somatoform Disorders categories for DSM-5.

The revision of this section of the DSM-IV is being undertaken by the DSM-5 Somatic Symptom Disorders Work Group.

The group is proposing to rename Somatoform Disorders to Somatic Symptom Disorders and combine a number of existing categories under a portmanteau term, Complex Somatic Symptom Disorder.  Current proposals for Somatic Symptom Disorders for DSM-5 can be found here Somatic Symptom Disorders.

A third public review of proposals for changes to categories and criteria is anticipated in May 2012.

When dates for this final stakeholder comment period have been finalized and when the third round of draft proposals has been published on the DSM-5 Development site I will update the DSM-5 draft page.

The custom URL for that page is http://tinyurl.com/third-draft

I shall be Tweeting alerts for the third public review at @MEagenda using hashtag #DSM5thirddraft

“Harmonization” of DSM-5 and ICD-11

This site is also monitoring for potential “harmonization” of the corresponding category sections for DSM-5 (Somatic Symptom Disorders) and ICD-11 (Somatoform Disorders).

This (simplified) table sets out how the two existing classification systems (DSM-IV and ICD-10) currently correspond for the Somatoform Disorders categories.

We have little information on how closely the ICD Topic Advisory Group for the revision of Chapter V: Mental and Behavioural Disorders (TAG MH) is collaborating with the DSM-5 Somatic Symptom Disorders Work Group over the revisions of their respective Somatoform Disorders sections.

Until the ICD-11 Beta Drafting platform is launched (ETA May 2012), it won’t be evident what changes the ICD Revision Topic Advisory Group (TAG) for Mental Health are proposing for the structure, content and classifications of its corresponding Somatoform Disorders section, or to what extent ICD Revision intends that any changes to its own Somatoform Disorders categories will mirror DSM-5 Work Group proposals.
